STEEL BEAMS FOR STRUCTURAL FABRICATION

RSJ beam stands for rolled steel joist beam. Different people use different phrases for this type of beam but this seems to be one of the most common. They can also be known as I beams, H beams or wide flange beams. Beams have been used for hundreds of years for building small and large structures. The more common uses are for frames of small and large properties and roof beams. Roof beams are becoming ever more popular of late as builders are being asked by their customers to build on existing properties (loft extensions mainly) as oppose to buying new houses. The Euler-Bernoulli Beam Theory ( Engineers beam theory) is a simplification of the linear theory of elasticity which provides a means of calculating the load carrying and deflection characteristics of beams. This equation shows that these beams are an efficient form for carrying loads.

There are two standard forms, rolled or plate, rolled formed by hot rolling, cold rolling or extrusion template girder formed by welding. The majority of RSJ beams are made of structural steel but my also be made of aluminium or other metals. There are alternatives to steel an increasing amount of construction work uses wood such as fiberboard or laminated veneer lumber. The problem with the latter is these are very susceptible to fire and wane quickly if unprotected in a building.

RSJ beams are used a lot in the construction industry and come in a variety of standard sizes. Tables are made available to allow easy selection of the suitable beam for a given applied load. RSJ beams can be used as columns also. They can be used on their own or with another material typically concrete. When designing a beam many things are taken into consideration including deflection, vibration bending failure by yielding, local yields, shear failure and buckling of components.

Often the fabrications for structural work begin as prefabricated segments in our fab shop, then are moved to the site by truck, rail, or barge, and finally are installed by BP Fabrication erectors
